Gạo nếp ngâm từ 8 đến 10 tiếng cho gao nở đều. Vo gạo lại với nước rồi để ráo. Khoai mì lột vỏ, cắt khúc ngâm vào chậu nước gạo hoặc nước muối loãng khoảng 2 giờ đồng hồ cho hết độc tố. Khoai mì cho vào nồi luộc, khi nước sôi khoảng 2 phút thì tắt bếp, đổ sắn ra rổ cho nguội và ráo nước.
Cho gạo vào chõ, xóc đều cùng chút muối trắng, đặt lên bếp nấu khoảng 25 đến 30 phút là xôi chín. Khi xôi chín, đánh đều xôi lên rồi cho sắn vào hấp cùng xôi thêm 5 đển 7 phút để khoai mì chín kỹ. Tiếp đó cho phần dừa nạo vào xới đều cùng xôi khoai mì, dưới phần mỡ hành đã phi thơm vào rồi lại xới đều lần nữa. Đậy vung nồi xôi thêm 5 phút nữa rồi bắc xuống.
